ICRC VERSUS SHANNON RFC - MAY 31, 2008
The Irish Canadian Rugby Club, one of Ontario’s most successful, will renew old acquaintances when they host top Irish side Shannon RFC (Limerick) on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Fletchers Fields, 16th Ave and Woodbine, Markham, with kickoff set for 5 pm.
The ICRC have faced Shannon more than any other Irish side, having played there in 1970, 1980 and 1985 and hosted Shannon in 1985 and 1995. The local side will face a stern challenge indeed as the Munster men are currently top of the All Ireland League and list over half a dozen provincial and national team players in their midst.
Shannon tour here as part of the retirement celebrations for Anthony Foley, who led his Munster side to the Heineken Cup last year, and will play only the one game in Canada after arriving May 30.
“A great test for our guys and how better to measure yourself than to face the best”? said ICRC coach Mark Winokur, a veteran of both 1985 matches against Shannon. The ICRC begin pre-season play in April and will have completed just two games of the Marshall Premiereship season when Shannon hit town. The Greens come off a disappointing 2007 that saw them lose in the Ontario semi-final to arch rival Balmy Beach on an injury time try, 22-17, but will feature a young, developing backline as they attempt to return the cup last won 18 months ago.
“We are looking forward to hosting such a renowned club and getting a great crowd out to see top class rugby in Toronto,’ added Winokur.
