Irish take the Plate in New York 7's
Irish Canadian Shamrocks took
the Plate in the Premier Division of the New York 7's on a cold, windy Saturday
at Randalls Island, New York, despite being the only team to defeat the eventual
champion Rogue Wolves.
Game One saw the Irish take on Long Island, and after Jason Verstraten put the
Irish ahead with a try after three minutes, Toronto was then penalized 11
times in the remaining 11 minutes, which led to two Long Island tries and a
14-5 defeat. To say the Shamrocks were bewildered by the officiating would
be a huge understatement.
With the defending (and eventual) champions Rogue Wolves on deck, Irish made
several changes to the line-up and stunned the champs with a 21-17 win, evening
out pool "A" with Wolves, Shamrocks and Long Island all 1-1.
This game was widely held to be the game of the day, as the Irish came back from
a 10-7 halftime deficit with two tries from Chris Bowman to shock the
champs. The thunderous hits of Fabian Rayne and Dave Laing, and the
kicking of Brad Boss (who scored the other try) led the Irish, who played some
of their best rugby of 2003 in this game.

After a long and confusing
discussion at the scorers table, it was decided that the Irish "points
ratio" was not enough to put them in the championship round, and the greens
settled for a Plate Final date with Rockaway. This game was something of
an anti-climax, but two tries from Verstraten, and one each from George Azar and
Pat Russell gave the Irish an easy 22-0 win and the Plate. Pictures to follow (thanks George!) PS - and when in NYC, try the
ribs at Brother Jimmy's (up there with Peggy Sues, Dallas). Thanks
Tommy!!!
