Long time member, ICRC, ORU & CRU selector Ken Smith is being inducted into the ORU Hall of Fame at the Alumni Dinner on Friday Nov. 1, joining last year's inductee Eamonn Browner and 2000 inductee George Carson as the our ICRC representatives.
Ken was born in Scotland, and learned his rugby at Hutchesons' School in Glasgow. Upon leaving school he played for the Former Pupils team before emigrating to Canada in 1960. Following a brief sojourn with the old Bank Rugger Club, Ken joined the ICRC in 1962 and played back-row forward for many of the successful teams in the 60's and early 70's.
He has served in most Club Executive positions over the years including President in 1973 and 1974, when the first ICRC Colts teams were formed. In the early 70's, Ken chaired the ICRC Selection Committee before moving on to chair Selection for and be Manager of Ontario Teams. He was then invited to join the Selection Committee for Rugby Canada which he chaired into the early 80's. He then turned his attentions to Golden Oldies Rugby, captaining the Leprechauns and serving as Canadian Representative on the International Golden Oldies Secretariat. He was chosen as Chairman of the highly successful Golden Oldies Festival which was held in Toronto in 1989 and which featured 150 teams from around the world in a 10-day festival.
Ken "returned" to the club in the early 90's as Selector, Team Manager, Club Secretary etc. and latterly has resorted to the Selector role plus analyst of game statistics. In his spare time, Ken serves as a Director of Fletcher's Fields and as Chair of the Golden Oldies Scholarship Fund which has awarded over $25 000 to 1st Year University Students to help them pursue their academic and rugby careers.
Tickets are available for $100 and include dinner and drinks. Tax receipts will issued in the amount of $70. Cheques can made out to Rugby Canada and given to Trevor Jones Saturday at the McCormick semi-final vs. Brampton at Fletcher's Fields. He will be organizing tables.
