Irish Men have a good opening day in Cobourg
With Brantford cancelling
Saturdays pre-season fixture due to a lack of players, Irish travelled to
Cobourg to face a combined Peterborough / Cobourg / Queens University team in a
pair of 60 minute games.
The Irish development side faced Cobourg 2's for 30 minutes and won 24-0, then
Peterborough 2's and again won 7-5.
The first XV then faced off against a combined Eastern Counties XV, and gained a
45-0 win in 60 minutes, despite having only 7 regulars from last years league
champs available.
Both teams looked surprisingly cohesive early, the Irish breaking through with
two excellent tries from 18 year old rookie centre Kial Venter in the first 20
minutes. Raf Kaczmareks chip and chase made it 21-0 into the wind.
The second half saw Counties battle manfully, but the Irish got scores from
Kevin Turlo (2), George Azar and Brad Noble with Gardner, newly returned from
Darkest England, landing 5 from 7 conversions.
All credit to Dave Donald of Peterborough
and Mike Bradford of Cobourg for a great effort in getting over 70 players out
on a nice spring day, all of whom enjoyed the game and excellent BBQ afterwards.
The greens will now have to up their game ten-fold when they play Young Canada
at the Crusaders Ground in Oakville next SUNDAY at 2 pm. More information
on that game is at www.rugbycanada.ca.
