Irish XV in last second loss
An Irish XV with a mixture of
players from all teams were edged 37-36 in a midsummer friendly in Burlington
Thursday night.
Peter Smith's kick and re-gather seemed to give the Irish the win on the last
play, but referee Steve Scott signalled that he was unsighted and could not call
the play as time expired.
Irish came out flat and uninspired against a fired up Centaurs squad, and
trailed 27-12 at halftime and 32-17 with nine minutes to play.
"A good exercise for all, despite poor decision making and sloppy
defence," said Irish coach Mark Winokur. "Burlington wanted it more
early, and we did not step up as a team. Nonetheless, it gives us a clear
view of selection, and gave 14 players a chance to play first team rugby for a
change."
The Irish Development and Third XV's play Crusaders in Oakville next Friday night,
July 25 at 7 pm in the next league match.
