Irish start in right direction

Capping a one-day joint training camp between the two clubs, Irish Canadians toppled host Burlington 53-19* in the first pre-season match for both teams.

After a morning and an afternoon session of skill, drills and tactics, the clubs ended the day with a 70 minute run out in perfect conditions at Sherwood Forest Park.

With only six starters from last years cup final available, Irish had a chance to look at many newcomers and some on the comeback trail, and the coaching staff were pleased with what they saw.

George Azar and Bruce Maxwell touched down twice each, with singles to Seb Orsi, Jon Ashley, Ryan Carr, Peter Crocker and newcomer Ryan Ellement (Barrie RFC).

Burlington, competing hard throughout, managed two second half scores.

"Pretty loose and unstructured, but some very positive techniques and performances," said Irish coach Mark Winokur afterward, "and most of all, a very successful joint training exercise that compresses a weeks work into one day,"

The Irish move onto the Brantford Tourney next Saturday, with both first xv and development side competing all day.
