Irish win five on Alumni Day

With a generous crowd of familiar faces looking on, Irish Canadians completed a five game (3 men, 2 women) sweep on Alumni Day with a resounding 54-22 win over cup holders Brantford, exploding for 32 points in the last 22 minutes to win going away.

The Irish firsts, who have won four on the bounce scoring 225 points in the process, trailed 10-0 into the gale force winds at half, but scored twice in the first minute of the second half to go ahead. Brantford, like the Irish, were missing several key players, but stayed in the hunt by grabbing a 22-17 lead at the 58 minute mark, but the wind and constant Irish pressure proved too much as the Irish ran in six scores to ice the win, leaving them firmly in second place in the Marshall Division.  Steve Conlon with 3, Kipp Wotherspoon with 2 and singles for Ryan Carr, Henry Miers, Ruairi Carson and Rory Connolly all touched down for the Irish.  Phil Mack added 3 conversions, and Ollie Bellwood a penalty goal.

The team was coached by Michael "Puku" Ross this week as head coach Mark Winokur was joined by backs Simon Dunne and Jay Verstraten in Edmonton for the RCSL All Stars vs. England Counties match (won by England 38-17).  Ross was pleased with the win, saying "except for some handling errors and too many silly penalties, we played very well."

The Development side got an astonishing four tries from Tim Hatch in a 45-27 win (2 also from Andrew Yearwood) whilst the thirds got back to winning ways with a dramatic come from behind 24-19 win over Quins.

The women completed a sweep of Aurora with a 22-3 win.

Next week sees the mens Development and third XV's face Balmy Beach at a venue TBD; the first team game is delayed until Wednesday, June 30, due to the Toronto @ Newfoundland RCSL match.
