Irish run in 7 to down Beavers
Slowly but surely returning to
form, Irish Canadians (8-2) ran in seven tries to defeat Brampton (1-9) by 43-19
Saturday at Brampton.
Playing into a heavy wind in the first half, Irish showed outstanding discipline
by running the game plan to perfection to lead 15-7 at halftime. Scores by
Mark Thompson, Jon Ashley and
Jason Verstraten, all unconverted stood against a
Brampton try on the last play of the half.
Irish, who remain second in the league with four to play, got two second half
scores from Owen Smith and singles from
George Azar and Bradley Boss to complete
the away win. Boss converted four of seven scores. Brampton scored on the
games final play to cut the margin.
"Our first 30 minutes were outstanding, best shape we have had all
season," said Irish coach Mark Winokur. "Our decision making and
execution were a little sloppy in the second half, but we can tighten that up
quickly."
The development side suffered from a poor start (down 20-0 after half an hour)
and could not quite make up the difference in a 20-12 defeat; the thirds were
29-15 winners after a 22-0 second half run.
The club takes a break for Labour Day next week, and resumes play against Yeomen
on September 6, with Markham, Beach and Oakville completing the league run in in
September. All hands on deck needed for any chance of a repeat of last
year; trainings will be held this Tuesday, and the following Tuesday and
Thursday.
