Irish score 13 tries in huge win over Beavers

Irish Canadians set a club record with five wins from five games in the first home day for men and women in club history.

The men swept three from Brampton, while the women topped Waterloo and Nomads to complete the day.

The mens first teams game ended in the shocking score-line of 79-0 Irish, 13 tries and 7 converts to none, but Irish coach Mark Winokur said the result was "..not really indicative of the play-Brampton had us under pressure for the first 20 minutes and for long spells after that; but they could not contain our speed wide, and the second half (62-0 Irish) got out of control."

Len Jean Pierre scored what proved to be the winner after five minutes, but the turning point came 25 minutes in, with Peter Smith in the bin, the short handed greens got tries from Simon Dunne, who slalomed his way through the Beaver defence, and Phil Mack, and that was essentially that.

Smith, Steve Conlon and Chris Verstraten then scored within three minutes of the start of the second half, and the floodgates did not so much open as they were vaporized, as the Irish tallied 62 points in 38 minutes.

Conlon, Mack, Smith and Chris Verstraten all had two tries each, with singles to Dave Stratton, Rory Connolly, Fabian Rayne, Dunne and Jean Pierre.

Roly Killen had one convert, Jason Verstraten 3, and Mack 3 to round out the scoring.

"Brampton were missing some guys, so were we (flankers Mark Thompson and Tim Matthews, and centre Ruairi Carson), so we know they will be much tougher next time," noted Winokur, "but although we still need work in some areas, it was good to see our understanding of the wide game starting to come."

The Development team had the toughest time of the day but still were full value for their 38-5 win, six tries to one; whilst the thirds, still a motley crew, seem to be enjoying their rugby in a 48-5 win, eight tries to one.

The men face the fast, young Aurora Barbs next Saturday at Fletchers in all three games.
