Irish get sweet revenge on earlier loss to York

Playing at home on a cool, windy August day, Irish ran in six second half tries to rout York 52-3 in Marshall Division play.

Running into the wind in the first half, Irish surrendered a Joe Pagano penalty goal early, but got tries from Fabian "Mr. Jamaica" Rayne and Steve Conlon, with a conversion from Jason Verstraten to lead 12-3 at the break.

The second half was all green as Ruairi Carson, Conlon, Mark Thompson, Henry Miers (off the bench) Verstraten and debutante halfback Raf Kaczamarek (indeed, his first game at 9 ever) all tallied, with Verstraten adding two converts and Rory Connoly three.

"Aside from a few dropped balls, a very good effort," said a pleased Irish coach Mark Winokur afterwards. "We stuck to the game plan, the new faces stepped up, and we really seem to be still in form.  I was impressed with our attitude toward defence, stopping all their scoring attempts even when we were well ahead."

The development side scored early and often, hammering home twelve tries in a 74-0 dismantling of the Yeomen.  The list of scorers is too long to mention, but Kevin Turlo was quick to point out his two tries.

The third team gained a 20-0 default win over York, but played a Peterborough XV and were beaten 45-21 in a friendly to keep everyone busy.

Next week sees all three teams travel to Brampton.  The Irish now have 41 points on the season, and pending the outcome of the Oakville-Aurora game, remain a solid second with four games remaining.
