Irish down York for top spot
Playing away after a venue
change on a hot day, Irish Canadians toppled York by 24 points to 10 to claim
top spot in the Marshall division after four games.
Captain George Azar led by
example, scoring twice from charge downs to lead the Irish.
Irish led 6-0 at halftime on two Brad Boss penalties, then scored twice from a
Boss penalty and Azars' first try in the first two minutes of the second half to
take command.
York battled continually through the day, but Azars second try from Mike
Browns' hack through iced the win. Mark
Thompson scored from a five yard line out drive before York scored on the
games' final play to reduce the margin to 24-10.
"All things considered, a good win," noted Irish coach Mark Winokur,
"we pressured them enough to get the job done; we know that they were
missing key players, and that we can play better than that-so a good day after
all the mess."
The games were originally scheduled for Fletchers, and many preparations laid on
for Alumni Day, but a bizarre decision to lock the grounds due to rain on
Thursday led to a venue change.
The development side, behind 10-8 with 18 minutes to play, hammered home four
tries in that brief period to down York by 32-10 to remain undefeated.
The third team got a default win when York failed to assemble a team.
The firsts are off next week due to rep team commitments, but the Development
side and thirds play at Markham on Saturday. The 1st XV play next at second
place Markham on Thursday, June 26 @ 7 pm.
