Irish break out in style
Running in 16 tries in 3 games
whilst allowing only two, Irish Canadians completed a sweep of Markham RFC with
a 24-0 victory in the development side game and a 34-10 rout in the thirds.
The first team had played on Wednesday night to
avoid a conflict with Sundays RCSL opener, and downed Markham 42-0.
On Saturday, back flair paced the greens development past the "Greys"
with little trouble. Chris Verstraten, Andrew
Yearwood, Rory Connolly
and Jeff Feeney scored for the Irish, who led 17-0 at halftime. The game
ended early when Irish halfback Sean O'Halloran, appearing to touch down in the
corner for the Irish fifth try, landed on the coil of the corner flag, and
suffered a massive and grave leg wound that had both clubs physio's holding his
leg until he could be rushed to hospital. Sportingly, Markham allowed that they
could not come back from a four try deficit and ended the game at 62 minutes.
In the thirds, Irish flair and fitness led to 24 second half points and the win.
A young back line and some fit forwards carried the day, despite the average age
of the team spiraling upward with the full-game efforts of the "Grey
Mouseketeers", 39 year old fly half Jon Jenkins, 34 year old loose head
Dean McLean and 48 year old hooker Mark Winokur.
Mike Calderone, Jeff Mackay, Kevin
Turlo, John Slaughter and
a pushover try led the Irish to their third straight third team win.
It was upset Saturday in the Marshall as Brampton upended York by 27-20, and
Aurora pounded an undermanned Beach team by 40-7.
Next week, the Irish play their first home game since October 2003, hosting
Brampton at Fletchers.
