McCormick Cup Knockout Game # 2
Irish Pound Markham to move to Final Four
On a bitterly cold, windy October day at Fletchers, Irish Canadians ran in
eight tries to eliminate Markham RFC by 52-6, advancing to the ORU McCormick Cup semi final round for the fifth straight year. With the grey sky occasionally spitting snow, Irish overcame 50km/h winds in the first half to lead 19-6, then opened things up with five more scores in the second half to dispatch their Marshall Division rivals.
Handling errors and a penalty count of 23-4 against seemed to be the only factors holding the green tide back as they controlled most aspects of play.
Jadon Schmidt scored three tries for the winners (giving him 5 in two games vs. Markham), with Kyler Petrie adding a pair. George Azar, Mark Thompson and Dave Laing added the others, with Ed Gardner six from eight conversions.
"We did many things well," noted Irish coach Mark Winokur "but we must completely eliminate mistakes to win a very tough game against Yeomen this week. Once you get to the semi and final rounds, the key is to aim for perfection-we know everyone plays all out at this time of year."
The Irish and York split their two league games this year (and last), with the Yeomen winning at York by 33-10, and the Irish prevailing at Fletchers by 34-9.
The development side
exploded for three tries in the last 15 minutes to rout Oakville
38-8, thus also qualifying for the semi final. Click here for game report!
