Irish
crush Markham to move into 2nd place
An eight try effort on a hot windy Saturday in Markham carried the
I.C.R.C. (9-3-1 and 46 pts) past Markham (2-10-1 and 12 pts) by
55-8 in Marshall Division action. A structured and
disciplined game plan carried the greens to a 28-3 half time lead
against the wind as the Irish overcame the absence of four regular
backs to overwhelm what seemed to be a dispirited Markham
side.
Brett Domenchuk, Dale Burleigh, Dave Laing, George Azar, Mark Thompson, Peter Crocker, Rob Forbrigger and Oren Smith all touched down for the Irish, with James O'Shea adding six conversions and a goal to the win. "We seemed to have some urgency and discipline today-maybe we knew we were missing some key guys and that people had to step up," said Irish coach Mark Winokur, "but we have to be realistic in that Markham were pretty down today".
The development side came from 19-5 down at half to win 28-19; the Twolves hammered home six tries to win 32-10, despite both sides being drastically shorthanded due to injuries, work commitments and weddings.
Next up, and the last league game before Cup pool play starts, are the Brantford Harlequins, who won at York 31-25 Saturday. "We should be motivated for that one as they kicked us last time-plus with second place and positions on the line, we better be ready," said Winokur.
