Irish in ten try rout of Markham
Irish Canadians put on clinical
display of possession rugby on Saturday at Fletchers, battering Markham 58-5 for
their sixth Marshall Division win in a row.
The game was essentially decided within four minutes of kick-off as the Irish
scored twice before Markham touched the ball. Phil
Mack and Steve Conlon
scored in the first four minutes as the Irish built a 31-5 halftime lead.
Markham were unable to secure ball at the set piece and turned over a slew of
ball in contact, allowing the greens to dominate.
Mack, Conlon with 2, Leonard
Jean Pierre with 2, Ruairi
Carson with 2, Fabian Rayne,
Rodrigo Lacassie and Andrew
Yearwood all touched down for the Irish, with Mack adding three converts and
Jason Verstraten one.
"We were a bit unemotional, but technically very good," said Irish
coach Mark Winokur. "Not a memorable game, but nothing to complain about
either; our biggest challenge is to stay on task."
The Irish are averaging 61 points per game and host the ever-confident Aurora
Barbs on August 7. "The Barbs have said we were lucky to win last time (a
51-18 Irish win on June 12), so I imagine we both have something to prove that
day," said Winokur.
The development side crushed Markham 41-0 to go to 7-1 on the year, whilst the
thirds got 3 tries from Mike
Calderone in the second half to pull away 47-22 to improve to 6-2 on the
season.
Training continues through the week with a "surprise" social event to
follow Thursdays session.
