Irish end losing skid, trample Highlanders
A nine try run over Fergus
Highland ended a two game skid for the Irish, second in the Marshall.
Showing a return to early season form, Irish scored 29 points against the first
half win and ran to a 55-12 rout of Highland on Saturday at Fletchers.
A locker room visit by former fly half Ed Gardner (London Scottish) and a return
to the line up of Jason
Verstraten, Ish Mozes, Brad
Boss and Alex Maggiacomo seemed to revive the Irish flagging fortunes as they
led 29-0 into the wind and added four second half tries to run their season
record to 7-2. Fergus, 23-22 losers to Oakville a week ago, sunk to 2-7.
Mozes with three, Leonard
Jean Pierre, Dan Hinton, Peter
Smith, Konrad Nikkel, Henry
Miers and Verstraten dotted down for the greens, with Brad Boss adding two
converts and Konrad Nikkel three.
Verstratens' was the most spectacular of the day, as the fullback (whose most
recent action was against New Zealand Maori) took a perfect flat pass from Peter
Smith and raced 90 meters to score against a stunned Highland defence.
"A marked improvement, and it was great to have people back," said
relieved coach Mark Winokur.
"We still have work to do around our hot zone play, but generally speaking
a solid effort which hopefully will restore confidence down the stretch."
The development team ran roughshod over an undermanned Highland side by 61-0 to
also improve to 7-2; the thirds were winners by default as Fergus travelled with
two sides only.
All three teams travel to Brampton next week to face the always scrappy Beavers.
