Irish slog past Highland in Fergus

Rain, the absence of five regulars (RCSL commitments) and a greasy field slowed the Irish down only somewhat on Saturday as the ICRC dumped Highland 39-15 in Fergus.

Four second half tries broke open a relatively close game as the Irish improved to 4-0 and 20 points in the Marshall Division. Fergus, gritty defenders all day, falls to 0-3.

Andrew Yearwood staked the Irish to a 10-0 lead early as he ran 70 meters to score after a 12 phase Fergus attack ended with a spilled ball, quickly spun to Yearwood who outran the opposition.

Fergus closed the gap to 13-7 by halftime, which was truncated after a serious leg injury to Irish winger JD Wheeler, who remains hospitalized at this writing.

The second half was mostly Toronto's way, with Ramzi Azar, Dave Laing, Jadon Schmidt and Oren Smith all scoring. Kyler Petrie added four from five conversions, along with two penalties for the winners.

"A messy and unattractive game," said Irish coach Mark Winokur, "but the selected players stepped up and got the assigned task done, which is all that matters."

The Development side ran in five scores in the first half to win 40-17, while the Glorious Thirds, featuring a wide range of players, ran out easy winners by 38-7 in their match.

Next weeks' match against league holders Oakville Crusaders is on Sunday at Fletchers Fields, moved to that day due to another Renegades fixture, as the RCSL match goes Friday against New Brunswick.
