Irish rally from 21 points down for win over Fergus

"It ain't over 'til it's over," said the great Yogi Berra, and he certainly had something on this one.

Trailing 34-13 with less than a quarter of the match to go, Irish Canadians rallied to defeat Highland RFC 39-34 at Fletchers on Wednesday night, with four tries in 18 minutes.

Highland, a new addition to the Marshall Division, have been game competitors all season, having defeated Beach twice and notching six wins in total. They took advantage of countless Irish errors to lead 27-10 at halftime, and increased that lead early in the second half. However, the Irish took over all set piece ball late, and put together a strong finish to move to 8-3-1 and 41 points on the season.

"We were two different teams here," said a bemused Irish coach Mark Winokur after the game, "Fergus took advantage of our many unforced errors early-but we looked very strong later on.  Maybe this will be a lesson in how to play for 80 minutes-but I am happy to win against a very difficult opponent."

After Highland took a 34-13 lead with their fifth try, Mark Thompson, Oren Smith, Seb Orsi and Ed Gardner tallied in quick succession to earn the bonus point win. Gardner also notched four converts and two goals.  Jadon Schmidt scored in the first half for the Irish, who scored on their first possession after Fergus had scored on their first touch.

The win was the third in a row for the I.C.R.C., and marked the sixth time in seven games that the issue has been decided in injury time.

The league takes a needed break this weekend, with the Irish at Markham on Saturday, September 8 in the next to last game of the regular season.
