Cork Constitution roll past Irish

Showing excellent structure and pace, All Ireland club League champions & Cup finalist Cork Constitution downed Irish Canadians 41-10 on "Fraser Cattell Day" at Fletchers Fields Saturday.

Con, who won the league and were narrowly beaten in the Cup Final, took advantage of Irish mistakes and yellow cards to run in four second half tries for the win.

Despite missing six starters from last weeks win over Beach (Dale Burleigh, Jon Ashley, Peter Crocker, Mark Thompson, Ed Gardner and Jason Verstraten), Irish pressured for the first score of the game, a penalty by Kyler Petrie.

Con countered with two penalties of their own, then punched in a rolling maul try on halftime to lead 11-3 at the intermission.

In the second half, pressure and yellow cards to Kyler Petrie and Brett Domenchuk left the Irish down 15-13 in men, and Con showed poise and experience in  punching in three quick tries with the advantage to break the game open.

Tom Maddens goal line tackle and strip left the ball for Irish fullback Simon Dunne to collect and dash 100 meters for the only home team try of the game.

Con captain Ulton O'Callaghan felt the game was played hard and by two teams "who both wanted to win."

Visiting Irish guest coach John Sparks said "Con play regularly at a level above ours, and they exploited our mistakes very well.  We simply lacked the game experience and quick organization to deal with them over 80 minutes."

The day overall was a great success, with a touching ceremony to present the Cattell family with the number 12 jersey in honour of Frasers' great contribution to the club, and stirring renditions of the national anthem by Eamonn Browner (Ireland) and Jessie Winokur (Canada).

The Development side struggled to a 17-5 win over Brantford in a very sloppy encounter, while the Thirds game never got off the ground.

Next up are three games at Burlington next Saturday, as the league run in begins in earnest.
