Irish sweep Centaurs in Burlington

A 31-0 second half carried Irish Canadians past Centaurs 48-14 on a cloudy day in Burlington on Saturday.  The home team led 14-0 after 10 minutes as the greens came out totally unprepared, but the Irish countered with 48 unanswered points to run their record to 7-2, good for 36 points and third place behind Oakville (39 pts) and York (38 pts), but with an Irish game in hand.

A scrappy and mistake filled game with many stoppages left many disappointed, but the five point win was secured and no major injuries sustained.

Captain George Azar scored three times, Andrew Yearwood twice, with singles to Mike Brown and Ed Gardner.  Gardner added five converts and a penalty.

"All credit to Burlington, who have improved," said Irish coach Mark Winokur, "but we showed only flashes of solid play-we really need to buckle down and simplify our execution to play 80 good minutes.  The long passages shown in the last two league games were just not there today."

The development side dominated all aspects of play in a 52-7 win over their hosts, while the thirds, with perhaps the most motley crew seen in green this year, hammered Centaurs 43-7.  The old adage "guile and deceit will beat youth and talent every time," was in play in the latter game.

The firsts host Brantford Wednesday night at Fletchers (6:45 KO) in the all important league make-up game, while the club next plays together on Saturday, September 7 at Fletchers v Fergus
