On a cloudy, cool October-like day at Fletchers, Irish gained their seventh win on the trot with a 4 try to 2 win over a determined Barbs side.
Canadian 7's captain and World Cup star Marco Digeralomo opened the scoring from a quick tap after 9 minutes; Irish scored three tries in the last 20 minutes of a penalty filled first half, despite being a man down for two of them; George Azar from a kick and chase, Mark Thompson on a line out peel and Phil Mack from a tap.
Both teams struggled to gain any flow against an astonishing 47 penalties called (five yellow cards), and the second half had no rhythm to it at all; Mack's second try with 12 to go put the Irish clear 20-5, before Dean Van Camp reduced the margin with 3 minutes to play.
"Marco led their side well and it was a tough game," said Irish coach Mark Winokur "but no one could really get anything going with so many penalties, and it was not a great spectacle. Still, its a bonus point win against a decent side, so we will take it and prep for York in two weeks."
The development side got tries from Adam Moody and Kevin Turlo in the first half to win by five tries to one (29-7), whilst the 3s were held up in goal on the games last play to go down by 15-10.
Post game was Rookie Night, which featured many sketchy performances by large men in diapers. Nightmares were widely reported Saturday eventide.
Yeomen bring two teams to Fletchers on Aug 21 (no game next week-National Festival) while Peterborough provide the thirds opposition that day.
Irish coach Mark Winokur was presented with a mug and signed ball on the occasion of his 100th league and cup coaching the greens (70 won, 26 lost, 4 drawn) and was very appreciative of the gesture, citing the great commitment of the players over the years; however, he noted that "this won't affect our training plans starting Thursday, for sure!"
