League Game
IRISH IN ANOTHER BIZARRE CLIFF HANGAR
Eric
Cuzzolinos penalty goal in the ninth minute of injury time lifted
The Academy into a 23-23 tie with the Irish in league play
Saturday
at Kingston. For the third straight
game, the match was decided at the final moment as the Irish had
rallied from
13-6 down to take the lead in regulation.
Irish forwards
pounding away and Academy backs with quick counters was the order of
the day, with the Irish finally taking a
16-13 lead at the 80 minute
mark before another final frame fireworks finish. Academy led
8-6 at halftime, and 13-9 late into
the game before Irish prop Jon
Ashley scored the first of his two tries. Ed
Gardner converted both to seemingly cap a comeback.
Academy flanker Milan Mrdanovich picked up from a wheeled scrum
(yes, the law book does say that the flanker may not
play the ball
from a scrum) and scored under the posts, then Cuzzolino kicked his
last minute penalty.
The Irish actually
controlled the kickoff and rucked their way to the Academy 25 before
the referee blew the final whistle.
"Another strange
affair in which we did everything but win," said coach Mark
Winokur, "the Academy played good defense
and their handling
was better than ours, but we did plenty of good things, more than
enough to win. The fact that we only
trained once in three
weeks together (compared to the daily sessions at the Academy)
obviously impacted the result.
These erratic performances will
only end when we re commit our selves to twice a week
training." To that end, it was decided
to schedule a
session MONDAY AT BREBEUF AT 7.
This week is a busy
one as the Irish host Old Crescent on Wednesday night at Fletchers,
then play Oakville in Alliston next Saturday
(all three sides).
