Irish crush league leaders as future looks bright
The Irish
Women's development team threw down the gauntlet to league leaders Toronto
Scottish 2 on Tuesday night and showed that they are one of the teams to beat
with a dominating 9 try, 53-0 victory. After a slow start to the season the Irish have now moved
into second place in the standings and have set their sights on overtaking the
league leaders by the end of the season.
Continuing
with the theme of developing young talented players for the future, the Irish
once again fielded a young side with 13 players under the age of 22. Though a young team, there is quality talent in the side led
by Canadian junior Megan Gibbs who scored 2 trys and scoring phenom Karen
Dillaine who tallied a remarkable 5 trys on the evening. Other scorers were Ontario junior Jenny Wong making her debut
with the club and Cheryl Morris who caps a fantastic week with a try and 4
conversions. The game was never in
doubt as the Irish Women methodically went about dissecting holes in the
Scottish defence all night long.
“The last
few performances by the 2nd XV have shown that this team is really
starting to come together. They
will only get better as they spend more time training with each other and
forming better chemistry,” replied head coach Rodin “Koko” Lozada when
asked to comment on the recent dominating form of the development side.
“The last few games show that we have depth in quality and talent
within the club. Several of these
young players are already pushing the veterans for their spots.”
Assistant
coach and club recruiting director Karen Ferguson added, “We have made a
concerted effort to recruit young quality players this season to solidify our
future base of talent. It looks
like we have done a pretty good job of attracting and developing some of the
best young players in the province.”
The 2nd XV next face the Brampton Beavers on July 24th at Fletcher’s Fields. The Beavers will be looking to improve on their previous meeting which was a 79-0 destruction at the hands of the Irish.
