Irish Women stumble in season opener
The 2005
season opened last weekend with the Irish Women splitting a pair of games with
the Yeomen Women. The day started
well as the 2nd XV overwhelmed their opponents and ran away with a
huge 53 – 0 victory. Unfortunately
a poor effort by the 1st XV resulted in a season opening 12 – 26
loss to a very tough opponent.
“We simply
got outworked and showed a lack of heart and work ethic against a tough team”
commented a disappointed head coach Rodin “Koko” Lozada.
“The talent level in the OWL has increased this season and some teams
have made huge strides and will be a major factor in the standings this
season.” First half trys were
scored by Kylie James and Karen Lozada. Jane
Segal added a conversion as the two teams went into the half deadlocked at 12
– 12. The Yeomen then dominated
the ruck and maul and succeeded in dominating possession in the second half and
ran in two trys as a result.
The 2nd
XV started the season much like it ended last season with a convincing victory.
The defending champions ran in nine trys and showed the depth in talent
that characterizes the Irish Women’s club for the 2005 season.
“Some of these young players showed that they are more than capable of
playing in the 1st XV, and will probably end up there at some point
during the season” Lozada said. Trys
were scored by Karen Dillaine (2), Laura Steele, Jen Cufino, Jess Panzer, Jackie
Scott, and Jenn Clark who scored a hat trick of trys on her debut in the green
jersey. Sonia Sennik accented a
powerful performance by adding 4 conversions.
The season continues on Saturday May 28th for both teams as they women in green take on the Aurora Barbarians at Fletcher’s Fields. The Irish Women will be looking to atone for the stumble of last weekend and re-establish themselves as one of the teams to beat in 2005.
