Waterloo sees a Green blur as Irish romp

After a very successful weekend, the Irish Women head into a break in the schedule with some renewed confidence and a return to the status as one of the elite teams in the OWL.  On Saturday afternoon, the Irish Women hosted a struggling Waterloo County side for a pair of matches and both teams improved their records with convincing wins.

The 1st XV continued their improved form and seem to have regained the confidence they lost in the opening game of the season.  Despite having several first choice players missing or were being rested, the 1st XV dominated play and were never in any real danger of losing the game.  Seven different try scorers is evidence of the depth of talent the Irish can call upon.  The score at halftime was 20 – 0 on trys by Jenn Clark, Nicole Nerling, and Lindsey Bernrot.  Jane Segal added a penalty kick and a conversion.  The first half domination was tempered by the serious leg injury suffered by Irish rookie Jen Clark who had to be helped off the field.

The second half saw head coach Rodin Lozada being liberal with his bench as the he dipped further into the Irish depth pool.  The results were the same and four more trys were scored by Kylie James, Barb Lamb, Kirsten Sample and Christine Ford.  Segal rounded off the scoring with 2 more conversions.  “I asked the players to build and improve over our performance last week, and for the most part that is what we got today.” Lozada commented.

The 2nd XV also returned to form and the availability of some first choice players after being unavailable last week made for a huge turnaround from last week sub-par performance.  The Irish scored early with Dan Dillon crashing over the line 4 minutes into the game bursting open the floodgates for the rest of the game.  Touching down for the Irish were Emily Morton, Jackie Ritchie with 3, Dillon with her second, Karen Dillaine, Debbie Brenneman, Ashley Deane, and Nicole DiNunzio.  Joanne Jacyk added three conversions for a 56 – 0 destruction of a young Waterloo County side.

With the Canada/Wales international next weekend, the Irish Women will take a well-deserved weekend off to enjoy the festivities.  Preparations will continue for a pair of matches against the Toronto Saracens on Saturday June 18th as part of ICRC Alumni Day celebrations.
