Irish Women dump Scottish in Ottawa
The Irish Women finished their pre-season schedule this past weekend with a trip to Twin Elm Rugby Park to face the Ottawa Scottish. A dominating performance by the Irish Women saw them come home with a 56 – 0, 10 try runaway victory against their hosts.
Tracie Allan making her return to the team from her studies set the pace with 4 trys and quickly re-established her as one of the most dangerous wingers in the province. Canada U19 player Kristin Konieczny opened the scoring one minute into the game after the Irish scrum overpowered the Scottish, stole the ball and proceeded to rumble down the field to open the floodgates. Jackie Scott with 2, Christine Ford, Laura Steele and Karen Ferguson also touched down trys for the Irish, while Jane Segal added 3 conversions to round out the scoring.
It was one
way traffic for most of the game and the Irish Women showed some impressive
passages of play. “The great
inter-play between the backs and forwards shows me that we are buying into the
15 man type of rugby we want to play this season,” stated coach Koko Lozada.
“Having both Tracie and Kristin back in the line-up made an already
good team stronger. They both
played significant roles in the fine play of the team this weekend.”
With the pre-season now over, the Irish Women 1st XV will meet the Yeomen Women RFC next weekend at Fletcher’s Fields in their OWL season opener. The 2nd XV opens their season on May 29th against the Toronto Saracens.
