Irish Women run wild on Saracens

The Irish Women showed signs that they have regained their old form and that the swagger is back in their step as they demolished the Toronto Saracens by a score of  66 – 0 on ICRC Alumni Day.  After a shocking loss to open the season, the Irish Women have slowly worked themselves out of a funk and now find themselves in a huge match up next weekend against the defending champions Toronto Scottish.  The Irish 2nd XV gained a bonus point win through a default by the Saracens 2nd XV who were unable to field a team through a lack of available players.

The women in green came storming out of the blocks as they opened the scoring 1 minute into the game through a try by Janelle Ritchie.  The Irish completely dominated the first half hour of the game as they built a 42 – 0 lead with trys by Kristin Konieczny, Jackie Scott, Jane Segal, Kirsten Sample, Karen Dillaine, and Lindsey Bernrot with 2.  With the game well in hand, head coach Rodin Lozada went to the bench in the second half and the substitutes showed no drop off in level of play as they ran in four more trys by Bernrot to finish off her hat trick, Kendra Kryszak, Dillaine with her second and Christina Hawkins.  Jane Segal added 3 conversions for a final score of 66 – 0.

“We played with purpose and were ruthless in attack.  When you play with that combination, chances are you will come out with a pretty good performance” commented Lozada referring to the women’s team performance.  “Next week will be a big test for us as the Scottish are the best team in the country and will be until someone knocks them off their porch.”

Next week the Irish Women will be playing in the Rogers Cable Game of the Week against the defending league and cup champions Toronto Scottish.  Kick-off is Saturday June 25th at 1:30 pm and the game will be broadcast on Rogers Community Cable on Sunday evening at 7pm.  The 2nd XV will also be facing the Scottish with kick-off at 12:00pm.
