Historic day for club as Women win their pre-season debut
The Irish
Canadian Rugby Club Women made their historic debut on Saturday afternoon with
an impressive 30-0 victory over the Hamilton Hornets at Olympic Park in
Hamilton. Despite a scrappy and
committed performance by the Hornets, the Irish Women ran in 6 trys led by
flanker Meagan Haney with trys on either side of halftime.
Val Pospodinis scored the historic first try just three minutes into the
game after the ball was moved wide from several phases for the centre to score
in the left corner. Other trys were
scored by Christine Ford, Carolynn Gludish and debutante Barb Lamb.
With numerous
players unavailable to play due to school and work commitments, the Irish Women
entered the game under strength but the depth of the team was evident as they
dominated all phases of play. The
class of the club’s veteran players combined with the skill and enthusiasm of
the new recruits proved to be too much
to handle for Hamilton and the Irish Women put out a good performances in their
first ever game in club colours. “I
was satisfied with the players’ performance especially when you consider that
we were missing several first choice players.
I was especially pleased to see that our veterans led from the front and
are showing good form so early in the season.”, stated head coach Rodin
“Koko” Lozada. “We made
typical first game of the season mistakes but we also showed a commitment to
working on and improving the areas we identified during the pre-season.”
The Irish Women travel to London next Sunday as they take on the University of Western Ontario Touring Squad who are preparing for a tour of New Zealand. Several members of Irish will be facing their fellow team-mates as Jen and Kendra Kryszak, and new recruits Sarah Deleeuw and Kristin Ferguson are members of the UWO touring team.
