2-0! Irish Junior Women show a great of talent in victory
The Irish
Women’s Junior team went 2 and 0 to start the season with an extremely
impressive road performance as they defeated Markham RFC 27 – 0 on Wednesday
night. In a thoroughly dominating
display of wide open, running rugby, the junior women ran in five trys to gain
the bonus point victory.
Showing
that the club has depth in talent, the Irish Women fielded a new look team but
with the same results. Looking to play an expansive game, the juniors moved the ball
around the pitch stretching the Markham defense and creating gaps in the defense.
The pressure paid off as Ontario Junior Karen Dillane crossed the line
six minutes into the game. Kayla
Akarakas powered over for two consecutive trys, the first of which was converted
by prop/goal kicker Natalie Zeldin. The
Irish went into the break with a 17 – 0 lead.
The second
half was one of utter dominance as Markham was pinned in their half of the field
and were relegated to defending numerous Irish assaults on their goal line.
Second half trys were scored by winger Simone Akai and last week’s hero
Lindsey Bradbury. Final score was 27 – 0 as the Irish open with two victories
in their debut season. “The
forwards picked up their aggression this week and the backs continue to show
their dominance outwide,” stated Co-Coach Karen Lozada. Lozada and fellow coach Mary Velpel singled out fullback
Daisy Miers (the more talented, smarter and definitely better looking of the
Miers siblings) and flanker Kizil Reder as players that made significant
contributions to the victory.
The Irish Junior Women defend their unbeaten record against the Toronto Scottish Junior Women next Wednesday night July 13th at Fletcher’s Fields. Kick-off is at 6:30pm. Anybody looking to see an entertaining game and also get a glimpse into the future of the Women’s program should make the effort to come out and support this remarkable group of young athletes.
